The glues or adhesives of any kind are polymer chemical compounds which are formulated based on the needs or performances. These performances can be bonding to certain substrates (surfaces), bond strengths, cure speeds, cure times, gap filling, odor, color, temperature tolerances and many more characteristics.
The glue found in department stores (Walmart, Sears, Target etc.) or hardware stores (Home Depot, Lowes, ACE etc.) are NOT the same as Industrial or Commercial grades. These are glues from reputed manufacturers which carry the same product identification but formulated for much lower level of performances in terms of bonding strengths, bonding substrates, cure speeds, cure time and many more parameters. The industrial grade is much more potent than the consume grade. As an example: The common glue called Crazy Glue is typically Cyanoacrylate adhesive….this is marketed in Walmart or other department stores to glue paper, wood, plastic yet the same family of glue is designed to glue rubber, plastic, metal for robust bonding necessary for industrial applications. There are significant differences in performances.
The polymer components of each formulation of any glue dictate the performance. The quantity or concentration of each components in each formulation also play roles in the performances. So, the myth that glue for household uses is the same as industrial uses even if the product carries the same identifications is NOT TRUE!
